PAULINE CUSHMAN - Union Spy
Pauline Cushman, an actress by trade, scout and Union Spy became known as the Darling of the South after gathering information of great value to the advancing Union forces. Her knowledge of Southern movements and strategies was a great help to Union General William Rosecrans. In recognition of her service to the cause, Generals Gordon Granger and James A. Garfield (future President of the United States) awarded her the honorary rank of Major of Calvary.
